Naltrexone HCL Tablets are classified as an opioid-antagonist medication. It is used to treat both alcohol dependence (chronic alcoholism) and opioid dependence. Alcohol dependence is a long-term medical issue characterised by a history of excessive drinking. A strong desire for alcohol, ongoing consumption despite negative consequences, and a lack of control over drinking habits. Opioid dependence occurs when an individual becomes physically reliant on a substance, making their body dependent on it to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

How Do Naltrexone HCL Tablets Work?

Naltrexone HCL Tablets contain the active ingredient naltrexone. It functions by blocking opioid receptors and reducing cravings and urges for alcohol or opioids. It is important to note that it should be combined with counselling and social support to assist patients struggling with alcohol dependence in remaining abstinent.

Directions For Use and Its Side Effects

You should take Naltrexone HCL Tablets exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. In some instances, Naltrexone may lead to side effects such as nausea, vomiting, injection site reactions (which can include firmness, itchiness, nodules, and swelling), muscle cramps, dizziness or fainting, drowsiness or sedation, loss of appetite, decreased appetite or other eating disorders, liver enzyme abnormalities, cold symptoms, insomnia, and tooth pain. Not everyone will experience these side effects. If Naltrexone causes you significant discomfort, consult with your doctor.

Precautions To Be Taken

  • Before starting Naltrexone HCL Tablets, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have (particularly hepatitis or liver failure), any allergic reactions, and any medications you are taking (especially opioid painkillers). 
  • Additionally, let your doctor know if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. 
  • Since Naltrexone may cause dizziness and sedation, you should refrain from driving vehicles or operating machinery until you have fully recovered. 
  • The use of Naltrexone is not recommended for individuals with current physiological opioid dependence. Also, for those in acute opioid withdrawal, or anyone who has tested positive on the naloxone challenge test. 
  • If you experience mood changes while using Naltrexone, please consult your doctor right away.
