Description

Lamotrigine is used in the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and controls seizures. It belongs to the class of drugs called anti-epileptic medication. The medicine works by inhibiting the signals in the brain that trigger epileptic seizures (fits) and in another way preventing extreme mood swings. Lamotrigine is not safe for use in children younger than 2 years due to an increased risk of side effects. Lamotrigine tablets can be used alone or in combination with other medicines. It may be taken with or without food or as advised by your healthcare provider. 

Take the medicine as per the dosage and duration prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the whole tablet with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew or break the tablets. Some people may experience side effects such as dizziness, shaking, headache, diarrhea, sleep or vision problems, rash, etc. Inform your doctor if you have a medical history of depression, heart problems, or mood disorders.

  • Medicines used to treat epilepsy and mental health problems (Ex. oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, primidone, phenytoin, valproate)
  • Medicines used for HIV treatment (Ex. lopinavir, ritonavir, atazanavir, ritonavir)
  • Medicines used to prevent pregnancy (Ex. ethinylestradiol, levonorgestrel)
  • Rifampin (used for bacterial infections like tuberculosis)

Precautions and Warnings

1. Avoid consuming alcohol if you are taking Lamotrigine tablets as it may cause increased dizziness and drowsiness.

2. The medicine is not suitable to be used by the children. Do not use it in children (under 2 years of age).

3. Do not take the medicine without a doctor’s consultation if you are pregnant or breastfeeding your newborn.

4. Store the tablets in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.
